UTEP women’s basketball team honors former player killed in plane crash

Saturday the UTEP women’s basketball team took on Cal State Bakersfield at the Don Haskins Center.

But before the game started a moment of silence was held for Kanequa Chancellor who died in a plane crash along with four others.

“We’re going to miss her. I had her for 41 years and I’m so grateful,” said Linda Medlock.

Medlock, Chancellor’s mother, tells ABC-7 she still remembers coming to see her daughter — number 24 play for the Miners when she was so young.

Chancellor played basketball for the UTEP woman’s basketball team between 1994 and 1998 and continued to live in El Paso.

“I was so proud of her I’ve been coming to UTEP for the last 20 years. She came to school out here and we came everything Thanksgiving,” Medlock said.

Medlock tells ABC-7 her daughter was not only outgoing but outspoken.

“She was extremely driven, she was a vlogger, she loved to vlog. She was extraordinary in all things that she does,” Medlock said.

Chancellor was involved in the community.

Facebook pictures show her helping restore a home for someone less fortunate.

She was involved in youth sports and was also a youth minister at Destiny Family Christian Center.

“She loved the children, she loved the ministry, she loved the young ones. Anything that had to do with the church she loved it I’m so proud of her,” Medlock said.

Medlock tells ABC-7 if there was one message Chancellor would leave for young women it would be to strive for the best.

“Be extraordinary, set your goals … work on your goals, meet your goals do not accept less, attain your goals she would tell them that,” Medlock said.

Chancellor’s number 24 jersey was on a seat on the Miners bench through the entire game.

Chancellor died on her birthday. She turned 41 on Nov.4.
