‘Hour of Code’ meant to generate interest in computer science

Young El Pasoans joined thousands of students around the globe Wednesday for an “Hour of Code.”

It’s part of a global initiative to get more people interested in computer science.

Those not familiar with coding might thing it’s time consuming, or too complicated to learn, but kids we spoke with at Socorro Middle School say coding is cool!

“To other people, it’s not so much fun but to me – I love it! I’m so pumped coming to school because I love doing all of this. It gives me so much energy for the rest of the day,” says Joey Lugo. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to continue this program in high school.”

Technology is indeed everywhere these days, and these middle schoolers embrace it. Wednesday’s “hour of code” is a one-hour introduction to computer science, to de-mystify “code” and show that anyone can learn the basics, and broaden participation in computer science.

Socorro Middle School STEM teacher David Justo says, “it’s important to plant the seed. That hour is going to plant the seed and start looking for new technology, new careers, and to be open and receptive for new technology.”

Justo said, for him, it’s not a boring or routine job – it’s fun. He makes it relevant and productive by focusing on topics like Star Wars and Mine Craft.

For some students, the first hurdle is getting over the intimidation factor. After confidence comes creativity.

Techies around the world hope their ranks will grow after today – when an “hour of coding” could spark a lifetime of ingenuity for these students.
