H.S. Hoops: Las Cruces wins at Hobbs to remain perfect
The Las Cruces High School boys basketball team improved to 22-0 with an impressive win on the road at Hobbs Friday night.
The Bulldawgs are now 8-0 in district play and have now given themselves a three-game lead over Hobbs in the league.
But it wasn’t easy. Las Cruces actually trailed much of the first half and entered the break down 30-26.
But a strong third quarter turned the tide as the ‘Dawgs were able to hold on for their 22nd victory this season.
The Bulldawgs avenged last year’s 71-68 road loss at Hobbs with Friday’s win.
“You know, it’s always good to win on the road, especially in district,” said Las Cruces head coach William Benjamin. “It’s always good to win at Hobbs when given the opportunity. The atmosphere and everything is just so incredible playing here.”
Tasting victory at Hobbs is rare – something many Las Cruces players were well aware of entering the game.
“I feel good. I’ve never won at Hobbs, so this is my first time, and it feels good,” said guard Markus Collins. “It’s hard winning here, so when you do it, it’s special. We stayed mentally tough and pulled it out at the end.”
Las Cruces, last year’s state runner-up at the 6A level, will look to continue its perfect season at home Tuesday against Carlsbad.
