Chihuahuas to continue affiliation with Padres through 2020

The El Paso Chihuahuas will continue to serve as the San Diego Padre’s Triple-A affiliate through the 2020 season, the teams announced Tuesday.

Both teams agreed to extend their Player Development Contract that they’ve had since the Chihuahuas’ 2013 inaugural season. During that time, the Chihuahuas have made two Pacific Coast League (PCL) Championship Appearances, including winning the PCL title in 2016.

“We are extremely proud to continue our partnership with El Paso,” Padres Executive Vice President and General Manager A.J. Preller said. “As we work to build a championship-caliber organization, our Baseball Operations group has come to depend on the tremendous leadership and professionalism of Alan Ledford, Brad Taylor and the entire Chihuahuas organization. El Paso provides our top prospects with not only best-in-class facilities but also a truly passionate fan base.”

Since the inaugural 2013 season, 28 former Chihuahuas have made their major league debut with the Padres, including six 2017.

The partnership between the Padres and the Chihuahuas extends beyond the playing field. The Padres organization provides an annual stipend to support area community initiatives, more recently a donation to the Border Youth Athletic Association to help with their educational and developmental programs.
