Last of 5 charged over ‘Mexican Jerry’ slaying also gets prison

A fifth person has been sentenced to prison over the 2014 death of a man whose beaten and burned corpse was found in a vacant downtown El Paso building.

The El Paso Times reports Marcus Wayne Adkins was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison after pleading guilty to evidence tampering. Adkins was the final defendant sentenced in connection with the death of 21-year-old Gerardo Luna Jr.

Prosecutors have said they believe Luna was targeted because he entered the building, where homeless people were known to stay, from a street during the daytime.

Utility workers in September 2014 discovered Luna’s burned remains in the basement, originally thinking they found a mannequin.

Four others were convicted or pleaded guilty to murder and received prison terms ranging from 25 to 99 years.
