Document: 10-month-old boy fell down stairs; mother took him to Juarez to avoid CPS and EPPD
The 10-month-old El Paso boy who died after his mother allegedly took him to Juarez for emergency care suffered serious injuries when he fell down the stairs.
The police department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit arrested the boy’s 20-year-old mother, the victim’s mother, Kinari Yaksi Muñoz. Police said the victim, 10-month-old Alexander Mateo Sanchez, suffered facial injuries, a fractured skull and hemorrhaging underneath the scalp on January 20, 2018. The boy had a large bump on his head, police said.
Muñoz grabbed the boy and walked across the bridge into Juarez to seek medical attention, police said. The victim arrived at the hospital in Juarez without signs of life, investigators said. The US Consulate in Juarez contacted CAP and the unit’s investigation resulted in Muñoz being charged with Injury to Child with Intent to Cause Death.
A criminal complaint affidavit obtained by ABC-7 states Muñoz told police she left her son in a car seat in the upstairs landing area in her home. While taking a shower, Muñoz heard a “loud thump.”
The court document states Muñoz got out of the shower and realized the baby fell down the stairs. “She exited the shower and restroom to see the decedent face up at the bottom of the stairs with the car seat on top of him,” the criminal complaint states.
Munoz allegedly observed her son was bleeding from the mouth and suffering from a large bump on his head. “Defendant stated she did not call 911 emergency because she feared CPS/Police getting involved and possibly taking her two other children away from her,” the court document states, “Defendant stated she decided to walk over the bridge and into Mexico to prevent United States authorities from getting involved.”
Muñoz was booked into the El Paso County Jail on February 9, 2018 on bonds totaling $250,000. She was allegedly captured on surveillance video crossing an international port of entry into Mexico, the criminal complaint states.
