DPS to start using drones across Texas
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced the launch of a drone program to assist with public safety efforts.
DPS said the drones will be used for a variety of public safety missions across Texas, including search and rescue, disaster support, crime scene photography and crash reconstruction.
The program’s fleet includes 17 drones, which cost the state a total of $70,000, according to DPS.
Drones will be able to deploy rapidly and provide clear and immediate images and situational awareness to law enforcement and first responders, according to DPS.
Employees operating drones must be FAA certified and receive at least 10 hours of practical training. DPS said three employees have received the required training and are authorized to begin operating drones during daylight hours.
The 17 drones add to DPS’s aircraft fleet of nine planes and 15 helicopters.
