Person shot during argument at Northeast El Paso home, alleged shooter identified

Police said an argument is behind a shooting in Northeast El Paso that sent a person to the hospital in critical condition.

The shooting was reported at around 10:30 pm February 15, 2018 on the 5000 block of Vancouver street, which is a few blocks away from McCombs Street and Loop 375.

Police said the alleged gunman, 24 year old Lucio Castaneda, and his girlfriend went to a residence on Vancouver street to pick up the woman’s child from the father.

The couple got into an argument with the child’s dad. Castaneda exited his vehicle and pointed a rifle at Benito Gomez, the child’s father, police said.

Gomez allegedly picked up a rock and the Castaneda fired, striking the victim, police said.

Police arrested Castaneda and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $150,000 bond.

Gomez was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police said.
