Boys H.S. Basketball: Andress beats Hanks in playoff opener

The Andress boys basketball team has had plenty of success in the postseason in recent years, and now their 2018 playoff run is off to a good start.

The Eagles defeated Hanks 79-60 at Andress High School Monday night to open their postseason campaign.

James Curry led the Eagles with 21 points, helping his squad fend off a talented Hanks team looking to pull an upset.

Andress has made it to the Sweet 16 or better in each of the past four seasons, including a run to the Final Four during the 2014-15 season.

This year’s squad has not lost to any team other than Burges since the calendar flipped to 2018. It’s possible Andress and Burges could meet in the Elite 8 this season.

Meanwhile, San Elizario was the only other local team in action Monday night, falling in their bidistrict game against Andrews by a score of 67-44.

There are a total of 12 local teams set to begin their playoff campaigns on Tuesday.
