Early voting starts Tuesday for primary election

Early voting for the March 6 primary election opened Tuesday.

Among the list of elections, voters will cast their ballots to elect a new El Paso County judge.

Commissioners voted Ruben Vogt to fill the position, after he was appointed by former judge Veronica Escobar, who left the position to run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Former El Paso Mayor John Cook, attorney Laura Enriquez and El Paso businessman Ricardo Samaniego are in the running for the seat.

Cook served two four-year terms as mayor, and is the longest-serving elected official in the history of El Paso city government, according to his campaign website.

At 71 years old, Cook said he has “plenty of gas left in the tank,” on his website, and that he understands the responsibilities and challenges it takes to govern the county.

Attorney Laura Enriquez is campaigning with the the goals of reducing taxes, and helping rural and low-income parts of the county, in addition to improving facilities such as parks to improve the quality of life for residents throughout El Paso County, according to her campaign Facebook page.

As an entrepreneur, Ricardo Samaniego said, on his campaign Facebook profile, that his business acumen will help him in dealing with many of the challenges the county faces
Samaniego’s campaign flyers state that he is aiming to reduce spending, and wants to create more jobs. Improving roads, and ensuring projects are completed in accordance with set deadlines are also in his leadership plans.

The race for state representative in District 75 is the only contested seat in the primary election.

MarySue Femath, a member of the Ysleta Del Sur Puebla, is running against Mary Gonzales to represent constituents in the Lower Valley. In a campaign video, Femath said roadways and flooding in district 75 have not, and must be, addressed.

Gonzalez has filled the seat since 2012. In the 85th legislative session, the most recent session, Gonzalez said she made progress in helping foster parents make special education decisions for children in their care, and helping employees claim unpaid wages online with the Workforce Commission.
