EPPD: Teen accidentally shot with shotgun dies; man charged

The teenager shot in the chest with a shotgun died Wednesday and the alleged shooter has been charged, police said.

Police charged 25-year-old Miguel Angel Herrera Chico, of the 7100 block of Dale Road, with Manslaughter.

The shooting was reported Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at about 7pm, police said.

Police officers arriving on the 7100 block of Dale Road located 15-year-old Jay Diaz suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Paramedics rushed Diaz to Del Sol Medical center where he later died from his injuries, police said. The Ysleta Independent School District confirmed Diaz was enrolled at one if its schools. However, it did not reveal what school the teenager attended.

Detectives with the Crimes Against Persons unit took over the investigation and learned Chico accidently shot Diaz with a shot gun while “recklessly attempting to clear a malfunction,” police said.

Herrera was later booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with a bond of 50,000.
