Community Champions: El Paso wrestlers return home as UIL state champions

It’s hard enough to win just one state championship, let alone five state championships in a row.

The Hanks girls wrestling team once again made history capturing their 5th straight state team title.

The UIL wrestling tournament was held in Houston over the weekend.

Hanks completely dominated winning the 5A championship with total of 155.5 points.

By comparison the team that finished second, Canyon Randall, had a total of 78.0 points.

Along with capturing another state title, two girls on the team brought home the gold in their weight division.

Isabella Gonzalez won a state title in the 119 pound division and Victoria Nunez won a state title in the 102 pound division.

Also in 5A, Fabens wrestler Marlene Avila won her first state title in the 110 pound division.

Other wrestlers capturing state titles include Bel Air’s Christian Hernandez.

Hernandez won the 5A,145 pound division making him a 2-time state champion.

In 6A, Franklin’s James Mcclain Green III captured his second straight state title in the 132 pound division.

The Franklin Cougars also finished third as a team in 6A.

Also in 6A, Montwood’s Tereus Henry won his first state title in the 182 pound division.
