Border Patrol and Sunland Park PD investigate death

Border Patrol agents and Sunland Park police are investigating to determine how a man died in a culvert by the Sunland Park landfill located on Camino Real and McNutt road on Sunday.

Police officers say Border Patrol agents were chasing two men suspected of being undocumented immigrants early Sunday morning when they ran into a culvert located by the landfill. Agents were able to apprehend one of the men who told them his “brother ” had died. Officials said the man said he believed his brother was in a culvert nearby and possibly in need of medical attention.

Agents searched the culvert and found the man unresponsive. Officials say agents contacted EMS and Sunland Park police. A Border Patrol EMS arrived on scene first, but was unable to revive the man.

Investigators said Sunland Park Police took control of the scene and carried the man to the area where EMS could access the area and proved emergency care. EMS attempted to revive the man, but were again unsuccessful. The coroner arrived on scene and determined the individual was dead.

The investigation is still underway.
