NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers helps paint “A” on “A Mountain”
LAS CRUCES, NM – New Mexico State University Chancellor Garrey Carruthers celebrated one of his last days as an administrator by painting the “A” on “A Mountain”.
Carruthers, a graduate of New Mexico State, helped paint the “A” Tuesday afternoon. He announced his retirement back in August 2017.
Carruthers decided to leave New Mexico State the same way he entered when he became an Aggie back in the late 1950s.
Carruthers posting on Twitter, “When I came to NMSU Freshmen had to wear a beanie, sing the Aggie fight song when instructed by upper class men, and paint the A on A mountain. Then you could ditch the beanie. I am going out the way I came in.”
He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from New Mexico State University in 1964 and 1965 respectively. He has also served as the governor of New Mexico from 1987 to 1991. He became the president and chancellor of NMSU back in 2013.
His last day New Mexico State is July 1, 2018.
