New border wall construction underway in New Mexico

Construction on the new Southern new Mexico border wall has begun.

New images from Customs and Border Protection show new metal fencing panels being installed near Santa Teresa.

The new barrier doesn’t look like the prototypes being built in San Diego. The design is the type of bollard style fencing already installed along the Anapra border.

“It was easier to cross before, but it’s harder to cross now” said Victor Cuellar, a young boy living on the Mexican side of the Anapra bollard fence.

Video from Customs and Border Protection shows how the new panels are being used to replace low lying vehicle barriers. Construction was announced Monday.

Border Patrol Sector Chief Aaron Hull said the fence would help slow down crossers for agents to reach them in time, and neighbors of the existing fencing say it has made a difference.

“Fewer people cross now than before,” Cuellar said.

Construction is expected to end around spring of next year.
