6 arrested during investigation into stolen copper

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated that all the suspects named were charged with stealing copper. A DPS spokesperson confirmed some of suspects arrested as part of the investigation face unrelated charges.

Texas troopers arrested six El Paso men during an investigation into the theft and sale of stolen metals, mainly copper.

Among the suspects is an associate of the Barrio Azteca gang, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

The alleged thefts resulted in more than $250,000 worth of losses for three El Paso companies. W. Silver Recycling had approximately $247,000 worth of metal stolen; Union Pacific Railroad lost $1,365; and Big Lake Electric reported a loss of $8,000.

Sergio Vicente Miranda, 39, was charged with two counts of selling regulated material.

Jesus German Lopez, 25, also faces two charges of selling regulated material.

Roberto Camacho Jr., 36, was charged with one count of selling stolen regulated material

Scott Bravo, 32, was charged with engaging in organized criminal activity. He allegedly used fraudulent phoned-in prescriptions to obtain promethazine or codeine. He was also cited for several traffic violations.

Justen Edward Rojas, 32, was also charged with engaging in organized criminal activity. He allegedly used fraudulent phoned-in prescriptions to obtain promethazine or codeine .

Jail record for 36-year-old David Olivas III and Martin Moreno, 48, were not available.

A news released said four of the suspects obtained promethazine with codeine with fraudulent prescriptions. Promethazine is a controlled substance that has street names such as Lean, Dirty Sprite, Purple Drank, Sizzurp, Cody or Schoolboy. DPS said the drug is popular with younger adults and teenagers.

Three unnamed suspects remain at large.
