Dozens gather for Archie Duran Memorial Fun Run
Dozens gathered Sunday morning for the first 1-mile fun run in honor of coach Archie Duran.
Duran was killed April 30, in a crash involving a charter El Paso Independent School District bus.
Investigators said the charter bus was struck by a wrong-way driver while taking students home from a track meet. There were 25 students and coaches on board when the collision occurred. Two people were killed and 17 were injured. Duran, the track coach at Irvin high school, died at the scene.
At 9 a.m. Sunday, family members and friends gathered to honor the life and legacy of the coach during a 1-mile run.
“Archie always wanted to make a difference for the community, his friends and his family and we are here to just follow his legacy and keep his memory,” Duran’s brother, Juan Duran, said.
The event at Irvin High School was free. All proceeds went toward the Archie Duran Memorial Fund, which will provide scholarships to underprivileged student-athletes who seek to pursue higher education.
