‘Click It Or Ticket’ campaign launched with ‘ghost shoes’ display

This month marks the 16th anniversary of the ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign. A campaign that reminds Texans the importance of using a seatbelt.

Monday morning, TXDOT and local law enforcement gathered outside El Paso Children’s hospital for this year’s campaign launch.

The campaign launched back in 2002, and according to the Texas Department of Transportation, over 90 percent of people in Texas buckle up now compared to the 76 percent back when the campaign first launched. This year’s campaign launch featured a display of 929 pairs of ‘ghost shoes.’ Each pair of white shoes represented an unbuckled life lost in Texas in 2017. According to TXDOT, buckling up is the single most effective step drivers and passengers can take to protect themselves in a crash. Displaying the ‘ghost shoes’ is a way to remind people of the lives that could have been saved if they were wearing their seatbelts. As part of the annual ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign, Texas law enforcement officers will increase their efforts from May 21st to June 3rd to ticket unbelted drivers and passengers.
