Will I-10 project lead to the demolition of Eddie Guerrero mural at Lincoln Park?

Some of the murals at Lincoln Park in central El Paso are in danger of being torn down because of a TxDOT project, but wrestling fans can breathe a sigh of relief because the Eddie Guerrero mural won’t be one of them.

Lincoln Park is home to several murals, some of them go back to the early 1980’s.

The I-10 Connect Project is putting some of those murals in jeopardy, in particular the murals located right in front of the Lincoln Center.

TxDOT says 11 of the murals could be coming down and they are still assessing which ones can be saved.

As of now the only mural being spared from demolition is the one of the Virgen De Guadalupe.

With news of the murals being at risk of demolition, there was concern about one mural in particular, the mural featuring El Paso wrestler Eddie Guerrero.

Eric Dubitsky is the artist behind the Eddie Guerrero mural.

He painted the mural in 2009 and just earlier this year he was able to restore it with a fresh coat of paint.

The uncertainty of not knowing if his mural would be affected weighed heavily on Dubitsky.

“Scared is the word,” Dubitsky said. “I was very scared because the mural means so much not just to me, but to the city and the people of El Paso.

The Eddie Guerrero mural isn”t near the Lincoln Center and a spokesman with the Lincoln Park Conservation Committee confirmed the Eddie Guerrero mural won’t be affected.

When asked how he would have reacted if his mural would have been torn down, Dubitsky said, “I would have cried. I would have been crying.”

Even though Dubitsky is happy his mural is safe, he says he feels bad for the other artists who weren’t as fortunate.

“If it were to happen to me I totally would understand the hurt behind it because there is so much put in behind these murals,” Dubitsky said. “You know you put your vision and creativity behind it, there’s a lot behind it.”

And wrestling fans like Albert Cerda are also excited that the mural won’t be coming down.

He says the mural is not just an inspiration for wrestling fans, but for wrestlers from around the world as well.

“To wrestling fans that grew up watching Eddie or know about Eddie Guerrero, that’s pretty much the only thing that we have here,” Cerda said. “So I mean it’s great that first of all it got fixed up and second of all that it’s still going to be there even after this whole project is through.”
