NM gubernatorial candidate visits border, discusses jobs and support for recreational marijuana
New Mexico Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Michelle Lujan-Grisham was in Sunland Park Tuesday for a tour of the US-Mexico border.
During her visit, Lujan-Grisham told ABC-7 low paying jobs, coupled with the high cost of child care and housing, is a recipe for disaster. The candidate condemned what she called broken public assistance programs that make a parent chose between their child and a job.
“Do you want a mom who gives up childcare or do you want a mom who fights for her children,” the candidate asked.
Lujan Grisham announced her candidacy for Governor of New Mexico in the 2018 election, and beat out Jeff Apodaca and Joseph Cervantes in the Democratic Primary. She will be facing off against Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Steve Pearce in the Governors race.
Lujan-Grisham told ABC-7 she believes her opponent’s economic plan is incomplete and shameful. She said Pearce does not believe that addressing the state’s poverty should be an economic priority.
“I’m right here at the border talking to people .. you need to have relationships with people who can help you make a difference for your entire state,” Lujan-Grisham said.
ABC-7 reached out to Pearce’s campaign for a response to Lujan-Grisham’s claim. “MLG has taken millions of dollars from trial lawyers, left-wing special interests, and coastal liberal elites like George Soros and his family,” the Pearce campaign stated, “The reality is Lujan Grisham does not really believe in anything, she’s just in it for herself. “
When it comes to drug trafficking, Lujan-Grisham said she believes in recreational marijuana, arguing it will be an economic driver and not a gateway drug. “I want our intelligence community and our law enforcement that are working statewide to deal with real drug threats, including the cartels,” she said.
