Where are the best places to retire?
El Paso and Las Cruces have often been touted as destinations for those looking for a new place to spend their golden years.
ABC-7 reported in May that US News and World Report ranked the Sun City #5 out of the 100 best places to retire in the nation, and that USA Today also ranked El Paso fifth out of the “5 places where you may want to retire.”
However, another group of researchers is not as impressed by El Paso.
Personal-finance website WalletHub’s report on 2018’s Best and Worst Places to Retire puts El Paso at #80 on the list of 182 cities. Las Cruces comes in at #100.
With only 17 percent of Americans reporting that they are “very confident” they will have enough money for retirement, WalletHub compared various measures of affordability, quality of life, health care and availability of recreational activities. The data set ranges from cost of living to retired taxpayer-friendliness to share of the population aged 65 and older.
Orlando was found to be the best, followed by Scottsdale, AZ; Tampa, Florida, Denver and Fort Lauderdale, Florida rounded out the top five. The only Texas city to make the top ten was Austin. Newark, New Jersey was at the bottom of the list.
The other notable factoid from the WalletHub study was that the Texas city of Laredo was found to have the lowest adjusted cost-of-living index for retirees.
