SISD to host district’s first-ever School Safety Summit

The Socorro Independent School District is hosting its first-ever School Safety Summit this weekend.

Eastlake High School will host the summit on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

It will be the first of several summits the SISD Police Department has planned, every high school feeder program in the district will have its own summit in the next several weeks.

SISD Police Chief Joe Castorena said it takes an entire community to keeps children safe in school.

The summit will focus on the district’s safety procedures and emergency operations plan.

Safety protocols for lockouts, evacuations and lockdowns will be discussed.

“Our goal is to try to get parents, especially at the elementary level, to learn what our standards for response protocol is all about,” Castorena said.

Castorena said all campuses are monitored 24 hours a day at SISD camera surveillance, that will likely expand.

More than a 100 officers and security personnel to protect the districts during the day and overnight.

In the event of an emergency, Castorena said students and parents need to be equally prepared to react.

The next summit will be August 25 at Americas High School.

“It takes a community. If our community sees something at our schools, hear something about our schools, they need to tell us,” Castorena said.
