Texas Tech medical school earns Hispanic Serving Institution designation

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso has been designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

The U.S. Department of Education announced he designation this week, making it making it only the second health-related institution to hold that title in the nation, and the only one located on the U.S.-Mexico border.

In order to qualify as an HSI, the university must have an undergraduate enrollment of at least 25 percent Hispanic students.

Texas Tech said that as of 2017, at least 41 percent of the student body for the health sciences center in El Paso’s was Hispanic.

According to a news release, the recognition can open doors to new sources of grant funding through the department of education and other federal agencies.
