ABC-7 Xtra: New season, new expectations for UTEP football

It’s a new year, but the agony and disappointment of UTEP’s winless 2017 season remains a talking point.

Going 0-12 wasn’t the only thing that went wrong for the Miners last season.

Head coach Sean Kugler stepped down halfway through the season and UTEP coaching legend Mike Price had to step in to finish the remainder of the season.

As the Miners continued to lose games, changes began pilling up for the entire athletic department.

Jim Senter was hired in November to replace long-time UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull.

Senter’s first hire as athletic director was Kansas State assistant coach Dana Dimel.

Dimel, who spent eight years coaching under legend Bill Snyder, is now running the show for UTEP football.

Senter and Dimel are now expected to rebuild Miner football and build excitement for the upcoming season, which starts August 1 at the Sun Bowl against Northern Arizona.

As a result of last season’s downfall, the Sun Bowl saw fewer people in seats after each game.

On ABC-7 Xtra, host Saul Saenz will speak with Senter on what’s expected from the Miners in 2018 and how the athletic department is trying to get fans excited about UTEP football again.
