FBIarrests El Paso teenager accused of threateningschools via social media

A young El Paso man who allegedly threatened local schools on social media remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing on August 27th.

The FBI announced Monday that 18-year-old Dallas Carrera was identified as the owner of a social media account who allegedly posted a photograph of a box full of empty assault rifle magazines with the caption “Don’t come to school tomorrow.”

Carrera was taken into custody at 2 a.m. on August 22, 2018 and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Anne T. Berton.

The FBI said threats posted online and on social media can have devastating consequences, both for the public and for the perpetrators.

“This incident should serve as a reminder that threats posted online are not a joke. Anyone who makes a social media post threatening to be a potential active shooter should expect to be identified and prosecuted,” said FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Keith A. Byers.

If there is a reason to believe the safety of others is at risk, the FBI asks the public immediately reach out to local law enforcement by calling 911 or to contact the FBI at 915-832-5000.

“Once law enforcement is notified, do not share or forward the post as it could create panic,” the FBI said in a news release, “Remember, think before you post.”
