Montana Ave Expressway Project moves ahead

Plans alleviate traffic for drivers in east El Paso moved forward Monday.

A portion of Montana Avenue from Global Reach Drive to Zaragoza Road will be turned into an expressway.

Rep. Joe Pickett said the $121,733,895 project will be built on land that Ft. Bliss donated.

“The two lanes exist right now, we’re going to double that.” explained Rep. Pickett. “We’re actually adding lanes that don’t exist North of what runs here now, so most of the work will be done not having to shut down and stop traffic.”

Plan are also in places to connect commuters coming from Spur 601 toward Montana Avenue directly onto the new expressway.

This project, Rep. Pickett said, ties into two additional projects in the works, which will drastically smooth the flow of traffic.

“We’re going to widen Purple Heart from Montana to Spur 601” said Rep. Pickett went on to say additional lanes will be added on Purple Heart Memorial highway. “We’re also going to tie in an access road along 375 where the new hospital is going.”

The Montana Avenue project is slated to start in March 2019, and was expected to take between 18 and 24 months to compete.
