Trump set to campaign for Cruz in Houston Monday night
President Donald Trump will campaign for Sen. Ted Cruz and other top Republicans Monday night.
The rally is at the Toyota Center, home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
Supporters started lining up Sunday morning.
The Trump campaign reported that there were 100,000 requests for tickets, but the stadium only has 18,000 seats.
The president tweeted in August that he was coming to Texas to campaign for Cruz amid his re-election battle with Democrat Beto O’Rourke, and was looking for the largest stadium.
But the Toyota Center is not the largest stadium — that title belongs to the Dallas Cowboy’s AT&T Stadium, which has 80,000 seats.
When Cruz was running for president in 2016, then candidate Trump criticized him several times.
“Why would Texans vote for ‘liar’ Ted Cruz when he was born in Canada, lived there for 4 years-and remained a Canadian Citizen until recently,” Trump said in a Tweet in February 2016.
Trump used to called him ‘Lyin’ Ted.’ Trump also commented on the physical appearance of Cruz’ wife at some point.
Cruz recently said he wants to work together with the president.
“He’s the President,” Cruz said. “I work with the President in delivering on our promises. What I told the President the week after the election, I said, ‘Mr. President,I want to do everything humanly possible to roll up my sleeves and lead the fight in the Senate to deliver on our promises.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is among other Republicans who are speaking during Monday’s rally.
The event is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. El Paso Time. It’s expected to last about two hours.
