Local music producer behind Latin Grammy nominated album
A local music producer will be watching Thursday night’s Latin Grammy Awards, hoping singer Marcela Gandara nabs the prize for best Christian album.
The Chihuahua native recorded her album ‘Cerca Estas’ at Beacon Hill Recording Studio.
Leslie Johnson, music producer at Beacon Hill, is no stranger to the success of the music he helps create.
Johnson was a producer on rising R&B star Khalid’s album American Teen.
“Being part of Khalid’s album has been such an honor and as a producer it has opened so many doors,” Johnson said.
Beacon Hill has continued to work with artists from around the world including the UK, New York, Los Angeles and even local artists.
Johnson said there is “a lot of talent” in El Paso.
“Sometimes we have that preconceived notion that we have to move away to another city just to make it, but in reality, nowadays with technology and social media we can do the best we can wherever we are.”
Johnson believes Beacon Hill has helped change that mindset because they have been working with many talented local artists.
“Working with Marcela was a great honor,” Johnson said.
Gandara and Johnson worked together for more than four years to create music.
“Hopefully if the project wins the Latin Grammy, I would be a part of that award. We’re just hoping for the best,” Johnson said.
While local artists will come across challenges in the music industry, Johnson said they have to ensure they surround themselves around the right people.
“Talent is just one part of what you need, it’s not everything. You need to surround yourself around people with the same way of thinking.”
Johnson said artists need to set a clear goal and plan.
“Stay true to yourself, don’t try sound like someone else, don’t try to do what someone else is doing. There’s only one version of yourself and that’s the best you can do,” Johnson said.
The Latin Grammys air Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
