Women’s Basketball: UTEP beats CSU Bakersfield Wednesday night

The UTEP women’s basketball team won a low-scoring game against CSU Bakersfield Wednesday night at home to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Miners came away with a 53-47 victory despite only hitting one of their 20 attempts from beyond the arc.

“I’m just so proud of the toughness of our team,” UTEP head coach Kevin Baker said. “The fact that we were 1-20 (on 3-pointers) would deject most teams, but our team continued to defend and held them to nine points in the fourth quarter. We were down five and the momentum was not going our way, but the team collectively stood up and played a pretty good defensive game.”

Zuzanna Puc paced the Miners with her fifth career double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds) to help her team overcome an off shooting night. Katarina Zec added nine points and eight rebounds for the Miners.

UTEP trailed by four points entering the fourth quarter but managed to outscore CSU Bakersfield by ten in the final period to grab the victory.

The Miners will next host New Mexico State Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Battle of I-10. NMSU has won the last two meetings between the schools.
