ABC-7 Xtra: How Lopez Obrador’s presidency can impact the Borderland
Mexico introduced Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador as its new president Saturday in Mexico City.
Lopez Obrador took the oath of office as the country’s first leftist president in over 70 years, marking a turning point in one of the world’s most radical experiments in opening markets and privatization.
Lopez Obrador pledged “a peaceful and orderly transition, but one that is deep and radical.”
Mexico long had a closed, state-dominated economy, but since entering the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs in 1986, it has signed more free trade agreements than almost any other country, and privatized almost every corner of the economy except oil and electricity.
The impact of Lopez Obrador’s swearing in is being felt in the borderland.
And on ABC-7 Xtra, host Saul Saenz will be joined by El Paso Community College Economics professor Carlos Aguilar and Jerry Pacheco of the Border Industrial Association.
Discussion will include the effects Lopez Obrador’s presidency will have on the economic state of the El Paso area.
