LCPD: Newlywed assaults wife after an argument
Police arrested a Las Cruces man accused of attacking his new wife early Monday morning.
Angel Tovar, 35, of the 200 block of Turquoise Loop, is charged with a third-degree felony count of aggravated battery against a household member and a misdemeanor count of battery.
Sunday evening, the couple allegedly got into a verbal argument and Tovar had to be hospitalized. After Tovar was discharged from the hospital at 2 a.m. on Monday, the couple continued arguing and Tovar allegedly punched his wife while she drove him home, police said.
Once the couple arrived home, Tovar allegedly continued to assault the woman. Police said the woman accused Tovar of forcing her into the master bedroom where he straddled her, choked her with his left hand and repeatedly punched her with his right hand.
The woman was able to stop the assault when she punched him. She went to Memorial Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries.
Tovar was arrested on a warrant Monday evening and is initially being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
