Girl killed in Sunland Park house fire was a 3rd grade student at Desert View Elementary

ABC-7 has learned the 8-year-old girl reported missing after a house fire in Sunland Park Thursday morning is dead.

The Gadsden Independent School District identified the girl as Marisa Muñoz, a third grade student at Desert View Elementary.

The fire was reported shortly after 4:00 a.m. on the 100 block of Mesquite Drive.

Earlier Thursday, ABC-7 spoke with a man who identified himself as a relative of the people who were evacuated from the burning mobile home. The man told ABC-7 law enforcement officials were searching for the girl, who may not have gotten out with the rest of her family.

The man, who said he is a brother of the woman who lives at the home, said there were five children in the home at the time of the fire — two teens, two young boys and the girl. He said the four other children were located.

The uncle said two of the kids were flown to the burn center in Lubbock for treatment. Gadsden ISD identified those children as Julian Duran, a 5th grade student at Desert View; and Jasmine Valenzuela, a 7th grade student at Santa Teresa Middle. Gadsden ISD said Duran and Valenzuela were in critical condition.

Gadsden ISD said all three children affected by the fire lived in the mobile home that went up flames.
