Portion of newly-renovated Eastwood campus to open after holiday break
Students at Eastwood High School are in for some major changes when they return to class from holiday break.
Tuesday, a portion of the campus that has undergone some renovations for the last two years will finally be open to students and staff.
The East El Paso school is being renovated thanks to voters passing the Ysleta Independent School District’s $430 million bond back in 2015.
The district is spending $96 million to turn Eastwood into a state-of-the-art high school.
The district left 125,000 square feet of the Eastwood campus as is, but it demolished some areas of the school and added 250,000 square feet
The entire project is supposed to be completed by August of 2019, but portions of the newly-renovated campus will soon open for the first time.
A three-story classroom building is set to open on Tuesday when students return from holiday break.
As soon as you walk inside the building, you’re greeted by a giant staircase that leads up to the second floor of the building.
The building is equipped with updated technology features.
While construction has been going on, students have had to take their classes at another school or in several portables that were set up on the Eastwood campus.
The students even dubbed the campus “Fort Eastwood” because of all the portables that were placed on campus while construction was ongoing.
“It’s important for this group of seniors because they are able to at least get in to this part of the building prior to graduating,” said Eastwood High School Principal David Boatright, “Unfortunately, last year, seniors graduated from the Fort. Looking to the future, for future troopers, it’s going to be awesome because of the experience they’ll have in this building. It’s unmatched by anything we’ve seen so far.”
