Firefighters battle structure fire in Hatch, New Mexico
Firefighters are currently battling a blaze in Hatch, New Mexico, the fire chief confirmed.
“Approximately four structures” were involved in the fire, according to Chief Willie Herrera with the Village of Hatch Fire Department.
No serious injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but wind and weeds helped fuel the fire as it blazed through a neighborhood.
Neighbors smelled something burning and saw the flames, calling 911 around 2:00 pm Sunday after seeing the fire starting in one of the homes.
“Seven feet on one corner and starting to spread out really quickly, like quickly,” said one neighbor who was the first to see the flames.
As the fire spread to other houses they reached some propane tanks that exploded, one setting a roof on fire.
Residents were evacuated from the area after a gas leak that was quickly shut off and contained by crews.
They have since been allowed back inside their homes.
The village of Hatch is 40 minutes north of Las Cruces.
