El Paso Police identify alleged gunman in auto dispute shooting
Monday evening’s shooting at the Route 66 auto mechanic shop on North Loop was the result of a failed vehicle inspection, said police.
Arturo Garcia Medina, 60, is charged with aggravated assault. He’s accused of shooting Jorge Rivera, 52, the owner of the Route 66 Auto Shop at 8021 North Loop.
According to police reports, when Mission Valley officers responded to the shooting they found the shop owner, Rivera, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Rivera was transported to a nearby hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Another employee, 46-year- old David Maese Corral, sustained a minor grazing wound from the gunfire, police said.
The incident began after Medina’s car failed inspection, according to police. Investigators said that Medina and Rivera began arguing when Medina opened fire.
In a news release, officials said that the officers who responded to the shooting found Medina’s vehicle outside of his home on the 8200 block of Rancho Verde. That’s where Medina surrendered himself to the officers.
Medina was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under bonds totaling $1,500,000.
