LCPD: Security guard assaulted ex-girlfriend, pointed gun at woman’s young son

Police arrested a Las Cruces man accused of pointing a handgun at his ex-girlfriend’s son during a confrontation in November 2018.

Leonard A. “Chevy” Bustamante, 33, of the 1800 block of Dori Court, is charged with intentional child abuse, aggravated burglary, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and battery against a household member.

Bustamante allegedly visited his former girlfriend’s home on November 24, 2018, to visit his biological son. According to police, during the visit, “Bustamante allegedly encouraged delinquency on the part of his son toward his mother.”

Police said Bustamante and his ex-girlfriend got into an argument and the woman told him to leave. As Bustamante left, police said, he spat in his ex-girlfriend’s face.

After being pushed out the door, Bustamante allegedly forced his way back inside the home and threw his ex-girlfriend to the floor. When the woman’s other son tried to intervene, Bustamante allegedly drew a black handgun from a holster, racked the slide and pointed it at the young boy, police said.

Investigators later learned from a local security company Bustamante worked for that Bustamante was likely in possession of a firearm on that date, police said.

Bustamante was arrested Thursday, March 14, and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center. He was released on bond the following day.
