Brawl at Centennial High leads to brief ‘shelter-in-place’ status

A brawl involving multiple students at Centennial High School led administrators to call for a “shelter-in-place” status for nearly 40 minutes Wednesday afternoon

According to the Las Cruces Police Department, the fight involved several “young men” on campus; between 6 and 8 students.

The shelter-in-place status was lifted at about 1:15 pm, according to Las Cruces Public School district officials.

A spokesman described the fight on campus as a “brief altercation between students. ”

ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom obtained this letter, sent to parents.

More than 400 students from Columbia Elementary School are currently attending classes at Centennial High after LCPS decided to shut down Columbia in the wake of a mold infestation.

Note: An earlier version of the story said the ages of the students were between 6 and 8, not the number of students involved. It has since been corrected.
