UTEP men’s basketball assistant resigns after bribery allegations

UTEP Athletic Director Jim Senter said Miners men’s basketball coach Lamont Smith is resigning after bribery allegations at Smith’s former school.

Smith, who joined the UTEP staff in April of 2018 , was the head previously the head coach at the University of San Diego. San Diego ABC affiliate, KGTV, said a real estate developer paid $100,000 to help get his son onto the basketball team with the help of a San Diego coach.

It is unknown whether Smith is the coach in question. He coached the Toreros from 2015 to 2018.

The bribery allegations are also known as ” Varsity Blues ” .

Senter said he accepted Smith’s resignation and did not provide any other comment.

The Miners are coming off an 8-21 season, where they missed the Conference USA tournament.
