National Weather Service radar in El Paso area down for repairs
The El Paso NWS expects its radar to be down for repairs for the next few weeks due to updates that will extend its life into the 2030s.
Meteorologist Laren Reynolds with the national weather service says, “Our radar has been running continuously for the past 23 years and it’s a big computer so with any computer that has been running this long needs to have some upgrades done to it. So this way it can continue to run into the future all the way into the 2030s and beyond.”
The pedestal was replaced and the antenna will need to be reinstalled meaning the radar cannot be used.
Members of the public who use the NWS El Paso’s radar web page will notice the radar is down.
Should severe weather occur, meteorologists will use nearby radar sites as well as satellite data to issue watches and warnings.
