TXDOT kicks off national motorcycle safety awareness month

TXDOT kicked off it’s annual campaign for national motorcycle safety awareness month Wednesday morning, giving tips for motorists driving near motorcycles.

“Having these campaigns is lowering the fatality, we had close to 500 or over 500 crashes in 2017, it decreased to a little over 400 last year.”

Some tips given by TXDOT include double checking your blind spot when passing, assuming motorcyles are closer than they appear in sideview mirrors, and giving them a full lane of travel. ABC-7 spoke with a biker at Santa Teresa Motorsports and he said that maintenance is also important for bike safety.

“A big thing a lot of people always forget is chain maitenenance, chain and tire maintenance, so maintenance on a bike is a really big thing on your chain. If it happens to snap on you while you’re riding you don’t want that to happen. So you want to make sure it’s nice and tight, but not too tight or not too loose or anything like that. Make sure it’s clean, make sure it’s lubed up,” says Abdullah Gadru.
