Community Champions: Montwood baseball looks for more after bidistrict title

The Montwood baseball team already has a bidistrict trophy to their name this season, but they’re hungry for more as they prepare for an area round series against Hurst Bell High School.

The Rams were the only 6A baseball team from El Paso to advance past the first round of the state playoffs this year after they took out Midland this past weekend.

Montwood won two close games (2-0 and 3-2) to book their trip to the second round. They relied on solid defense, clutch pitching, and their sense of camaraderie to get the job done.

“We all get along. We all know who’s up and who’s down,” said pitcher and first baseman Alizaeh Gutierrez. “We all come together as one, and once we come together, there’s no stopping us.”

Their best-of-three series with Bell begins on Friday with game one Friday at Big Spring High School.

The teams will then meet Saturday for game two and will follow that up with a potential game three that same day if the teams end up splitting the first two.

One things is clear – the Rams loved the feeling of winning one piece of hardware, so they’re anxious to do it all again.

“And we all did our part to win that gold trophy,” said Aaron Oropeza, who delivered the game-winning hit in game two to beat Midland. “And the adrenaline when we got it, I think, was one of the best feelings I’ve had in my life.”
