Trump claims ‘a lot’ of immigrants captured despite few signs of raids; none in El Paso
President Trump said Monday that planned immigration raids began over the weekend and resulted in the capture of “a lot” undocumented immigrants, despite few signs that the operation actually materialized.
“People came into our country illegally,” Trump said at the White House. “Many were felons. Many were convicted of crimes. Many, many were taken out on Sunday. You just didn’t know about it.”
Immigrant rights advocates across the U.S. said they saw few signs over the weekend of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids that Trump administration officials had warned would begin Sunday.
Officials confirmed to ABC-7 that no raids took place in the El Paso area.
In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said ICE agents attempted an enforcement action, but he said they did not succeed in rounding up any residents of either Brooklyn or Harlem.
But Trump insisted the raids that did occur were successful.
Trump said he’d spoken to the head of ICE and that it was a “very successful day.”
“But you didn’t see a lot of it,” Trump said. “I’m not sure they should be telling you, but it was a lot.”
