Community Champion: 9-Year-Old Excels as Taekwondo Champion
Diego Najera is not your typical 9-year-old boy, and when you see all the medals he’s won in Taekwondo, you’ll get the idea.
Najera got into the sport when he was 5-years-old, and he was immediately hooked.
Najera is a state and even a national champion in Taekwondo.
He’s won back-to-back national titles, first in 2017, and then another national title in 2018.
This year, Najera finished in 3rd place at nationals, but this year was different because Najera competed at a higher level, and he faced tougher opponents.
“I was disappointed, but also just so happy that I got to learn the experience of fighting harder belts,” Najera said.
Najera has a red belt in Taekwondo, and some opponents he faced at nationals are black belts.
The red belt is just a step below a black belt which is the highest level of experience.
The sky’s the limit for Najera, and he thanked his coaches and his family for all their support during his journey that’s really just getting started.
