Deadly accident among multiple traffic crashes in El Paso County within the span of 24 hours
In the span of 24 hours, ABC-7 reported three serious accidents on Saturday in El Paso County. And between Sept. 22 and Oct. 5, there have been at least 11 fatal accidents, with 13 fatalities in both El Paso and Hudspeth County.
In the latest incidents, a motorcycle crash in east El Paso sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries. It happened at around 3 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Montana Avenue and Rich Beem Boulevard.
Hours later, another pedestrian was struck and killed on I-10 East at mile marker 38 near Horizon. A spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office told ABC-7 they responded to a call at 7:15 p.m. Saturday night. No information on the victim’s gender or age was provided. The spokeswoman said the investigation is ongoing.
Just before 11 p.m. El Paso police and fire crews were called to an accident on Mesa Street and Waymore Drive in west El Paso. Five people were injured. No word yet on the extent of their injuries but when ABC-7 arrived at the scene, fire crews used the jaws of life to rescue the trapper driver.
Since a fatal accident on Transmountain Road that happened on the morning of Oct. 3, El Paso Police confirmed 51 fatalities so far this year, compared to 50 in 2018.
According to a report from the Texas Department of Transportation, El Paso County had a total number of 19,441 crashes in 2018. Of those, 214 were serious crashes and 85 were fatal crashes with 87 fatalities.
El Paso resident Rene Chavez said he feels like traffic accidents are becoming more of a problem this year.
“We just have to raise awareness as a community,” Chavez said. Another resident, Homero Galicia said he believes the cause for accidents across the Borderland is distracted driving.
“People are distracted when they’re driving,” Galicia said. “They’re just flat distracted. We’re just not paying attention. You just can’t control other people, the only one you can control is yourself.”
