Paso del Sur group vows to continue fight for embattled Duranguito neighborhood despite court loss

EL PASO, Texas -- The Paso del Sur organization came together on Monday to make a public vow, with leaders swearing that the group and their allies will continue fighting long-developing plans to tear down the historic Duranguito neighborhood and put up a sports arena.

“We continue to demand that the city act in a transparent way," said activist Maro Munoz. "Duranguito is the birth place of El Paso and we must preserve the historical legacy that it represents.”

But as of last week, the Texas Supreme Court declined to hear their case, limiting their options to continue the fight.

And yet, they made a guarantee that the fight to preserve Duranguito was, in fact, only just starting.

The activists were not alone and had some name-brand clout on their side as they were joined by longtime El Paso Rep. José Rodríguez, who took a strong stance against the city’s efforts

“What is taking place here is an injustice to the whole community," said Rodríguez. "I am proud to speak out her alongside my friends on this issue."

When pressed to talk about what legal options the group had left with which to fight the city, Paso del Sur representatives simply said that their legal team is continuing to look at all options and create a new strategy that will be unveiled in the coming days.
