ABC-7 Xtra: Keeping Students Safe

EL PASO, Texas -- The August 3rd shooting is having an influence on the way school districts view security in schools.

Although that tragedy happened inside the Cielo Vista Walmart, the tragedy immediately raised concerns about security in area school districts.

ABC-7 Xtra takes a look at El Paso area school districts to see what they are doing to improve their security measures, and the way they respond to incidents, following the August 3rd shooting.

One of those is "stop the bleed."

That program is designed to teach everyone, from teachers, administrators and students, how to address medical issues on the spot, before a doctor can see a patient.

Beyond that, school districts are putting in place other measures to keep sex offenders from walking into school campuses, or monitoring social media to spot an indication your children could be placed in harm’s way.

EPISD announced it is unveiling a new program that monitors and alerts the police and sheriff’s departments about potential threats.

It is called ‘Navigate’ and is yet to be launched.

Find out more, Sunday on ABC-7 Xtra with host Saul Saenz. His guests include the heads of security at three school districts.
