El Paso deputies shoot, kill wanted felon who allegedly opened fire in far east El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a wanted felon after the man opened fire on them with an assault weapon in far east El Paso on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

It happened on Greg Drive and Ascencion Street near Mountain View High School.

Authorities told ABC-7 that a 31-year-old man wanted for five felonies was hiding in the desert when he opened fire on deputies with an AR-15 assault rifle; they returned fired and shot the man.

The wounded suspect, identified as Mauricio Hernandez, was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Hernandez had prior convictions for assault and burglary as well as drugs and weapons violations.

Authorities said no deputies or others were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

El Paso police, U.S. Border Patrol, El Paso constables and Texas state troopers were all at the scene Tuesday night along with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
