Bug experts say wet weather to blame for Borderland insect explosion

EL PASO, Texas -- An explosion of harmless, weed-loving bugs is now underway across the Borderland that one El Paso homeowner calls an infestation of biblical proportion.

The critters are False Chinch Bugs, which eat on mustard and pepper weeds. Due to our wet month of March, there is now a bumper crop of those weeds for the bugs to feed on.

"It was like an infestation but of biblical proportions,"said Briana Alarcon, describing the conditions at her El Paso home. "The whole wall, the siding, the windows, they were just covered. The floor looked like it was moving."

The bugs are common desert insects that while a nuisance, are not dangerous or harmful to humans.

"There is nothing to be worried about as long as you take general precautions like you would with any kind of insect that you come into contact with," said Denise Rodriguez of Texas A&M Agrilife.

"Treat them like a nuisance, like a house fly in your way. They are just going about their business and they will be gone in no time," she added.
