DASO releases body cam footage of deadly deputy-involved shooting from May

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- The Doña Ana County Sheriff's office has released body cam footage from a May 21st confrontation between a deputy and a suicidal man that turned deadly.

The footage comes from Deputy Jeremy Maldonado's lapel cam. The video shows him trying to talk down Carlos Gamboa, who was expressing suicidal ideations.

Deputy Maldonado can be heard talking with Gamboa's significant other at the beginning of the video, who expressed that Gamboa needed mental health care.

Later, Gamboa can be seen firing one shot with a shotgun at responding deputies after multiple pleas to try and get him to drop the gun, and Deputy Maldonado returns fire with one shot, striking Gamboa. The deputies can be seen approaching Gamboa to administer help shortly after. EMTs soon arrive afterwards.
