‘This is a real crisis’: Sacred Heart Church overwhelmed by the growing number of migrants
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)-- As the number of migrants camping outside Sacred Heart Church continues growing, church officials are becoming concerned.
Hundreds are camping outside of the church and the shelter has reached capacity.
Rev. Rafael Garcia told ABC-7 the large group of migrants arrived at the church about two days ago. He said he didn't expect this many.
"We were not prepared. I mean we are prepared every day for our capacity of about 120 persons, thatās all we can help," Garcia said.
He said there are various people camping outside the church of mixed statuses. He said he doesn't know how they arrived at the church.
He expects more to come before the lifting of Title 42 on May 11.
"I worry. I think nobody really knows whatās going to happen, but I think we donāt even have to wait for May 11th. We can just look at that reality now, whatās going to happen to all these people."
Garcia wants the U.S. government to step in more during this time.
"This isnāt something that we as a church can handle, so we really need help of authorities or entities to help," he said.
He said in previous months they were able to feed the migrants camping outside multiple meals, but he said the church isn't able to do that now.
